Hamsa—Hand of Fatima
Protection and strengthen the weak
This beautiful hand shaped amulet
is used for protection in the Jewish and Islamic tradition. It depicts the open right hand. Hamsa comes from a Semitic root and literally means "five". The Hamsa is usually shaped in the form of a symmetrical hand, with thumbs on both sides, not in the usual anatomically way. The origin predates Islam and Judaism and is believed to be attributed to the goddess Tanit, a Phoenician lunar goddess.
"The Hand of Fatima", is named after the Prophet Mohammad's only daughter. Her hand has since become a symbol for patience and faith. Levantine Christians call it The Hand of Mary. The Hamsa is said to provide protection from the evil eye.
