Shiva is both the creator of the world and its destroyer. He is the god of time and thus embodies all aspects of the interconnected processes of birth, death and regeneration. Although Shiva brings death, he also conquers death and disease and is invoked to cure sickness. Shiva is associated with asceticism, yoga and magic, but also with eroticism and fertility.
